Friendship
Jesus on
Friendship
The
Lord Jesus Christ gave us the definition of a true friend: "Greater love
has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my
friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a
servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you
friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to
you" (John 15:13-15). Jesus is the pure example of a true friend, for He
laid down His life for His "friends." What is more, anyone may become
His friend by trusting in Him as his personal savior, being born again and
receiving new life in Him.
'Secret intimate friendship'
"Surely
the Lord God does nothing, Unless He reveals His intimate secret counsels to
His servants the prophets." (Amos 3:7)
Amos 3:7 must be one of the most beautiful pictures
of the early relationship between the prophet and God. The idea of secrets
is not so much that of heavenly knowledge to which only the elite have access
but more with respect to counsel and confidential plans which God opens up to
His friend the prophet.
The best
way of imagining it is to think of the prophet and God sitting down together on
adjacent cushions in a nomad's tent in the desert to discuss matters, in
intimacy, not needing to shout.
Face to
face with God
1. Adam,
Enoch and Noah walked with God (Genesis 3:8; 5:22,24; 6:9)
2. Abraham
was a friend of God (Isaiah 41:8; James 2:23)
3. Moses
knew God face to face (Numbers 12:6-8; Exodus 33:11)
Under the
Old Covenant Moses knew God more intimately than those under the New! And his
desire was that we might all be prophets (Numbers 11:17,29), how much more should
we want to be face to face friends of God.
Importance of
Friendships
Proverbs
11:14 Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of
counselors there is safety.
Proverbs
17:17 A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
Proverbs
19:20 Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the
future.
Proverbs
24:5 A wise man is full of strength, and a man of knowledge enhances his might,
Proverbs
27:17 Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.
How To Pick Your
Friends
Proverbs
12:26 One who is righteous is a guide to his neighbor, but the way of the
wicked leads them astray.
Proverbs
13:20 Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools
will suffer harm.
Proverbs
14:6-7 A scoffer seeks wisdom in vain, but knowledge is easy for a man of
understanding. Leave the presence of a fool, for there you do not meet words of
knowledge.
Proverbs
22:24-25 Make no friendship with a man given to anger, nor go with a
wrathful man, lest you learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare.
1
Corinthians 15:33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”
How To Treat
Your Friends
Luke
6:31 And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.
Romans
12:10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Out do one another in
showing honor.
Ephesians
4:29-32 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as
is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those
who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for
the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and
slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another,
tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
Colossians
3:12-14 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate
hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another
and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord
has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love,
which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
Bible Examples
of Friendship
1. David and
Jonathan
1
Samuel 18:1-3 As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan
was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. And Saul
took him that day and would not let him return to his father’s house. Then
Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.
2. Elijah and
Elisha
2
Kings 2:2 And Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent
me as far as Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As the LORD lives, and as you yourself
live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel.
3. Job’s Friends
Job 2:11 Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that had come upon him, they came each from his own place, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. They made an appointment together to come to show him sympathy and comfort him.
4. Abraham - God's friend
This was more than just imagery for Abraham when God visited his tent in Genesis 18. If you remember God appeared with two others before Abraham who was sitting in the door or flap of his tent. Although Abraham is described as standing before the Lord (v.22) it was God who had come down (v.21) to visit Abraham, called elsewhere His friend.
The principle of friendship is also found in Amos. "Can two walk together, except they be agreed?" (Amos 3:3 KJV). Friends are of like mind. The truth that comes from all of this is a friendship is a relationship that is entered into by individuals, and it is only as good or as close as those individuals choose to make it. Someone has said that if you can count your true friends on the fingers of one hand, you are blessed. A friend is one whom you can be yourself with and never fear that he or she will judge you. A friend is someone that you can confide in with complete trust. A friend is someone you respect and that respects you, not based upon worthiness but based upon a likeness of mind.
Finally, the real definition of a true friend comes from the Apostle Paul: "For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:7-8). "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends" (John 15:13). Now, that is true friendship!
